What is a Nurse Practitioner?

A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical experience, which enables him or her to diagnose and manage most common and many chronic illnesses, either independently or as part of a health care team.

A nurse practitioner provides some care previously offered only by physicians and in most states has the ability to prescribe medications. A nurse practitioner provides high-quality, cost-effective and individualized care for the lifespan of patient's special needs.

NPs focus largely on health maintenance, disease prevention, counseling and patient education in a wide variety of settings. With a strong emphasis on primary care, nurse practitioners are employed within several specialties, including nurse-midwifery, pediatrics, school health, family and adult health, women's health, mental health, home care, geriatrics and acute care.

Grace Grymes Chapman

I opened West Seattle Community Clinic in August of 2006, providing family practice care to all ages, male and female, insured and non-insured. Besides my children, it is one of the things I am most proud of. “It is a work in progress and I love watching it blossom into a stable practice”. “One of the most satisfying aspects of my job is providing care to those who would otherwise not get care”.

In my spare time, I also work as a clinician at an urgent care clinic, Planned Parenthood, and the Department of Corrections, as well as volunteering with the Breast and Cervical Health Program mobile van and am Vice President of the Puget Sound Nurse Practitioner Association. I chose to become an ARNP because I like the autonomy that comes with it. I feel like I can make a difference in patients’ lives by allowing them a chance to make decisions in their healthcare plans. I also feel very comfortable letting my patients know they can work in a collaborative effort to get to the ultimate health care goal by offering them choices and not being afraid to bring in alternative medicine/treatment options that I or they may feel is beneficial. My passion is working with woman and empowering them to make lifestyle choices that allow them to stay healthy.

I enjoy establishing relationships with my patients and let them know I am there whenever they need answers. Patients get a sense of satisfaction knowing I will call them back personally. I chose family practice because I enjoy working with singles and families of all ages, male and female. I like the variety and the chance to see the family members as they grow and age, especially infants as they grow into toddlers and adolescents. My hope for ARNPs in the future is to be nationally recognized as competent healthcare providers by the media, other healthcare providers, and the industry as a whole.
